[Conventioncommittee1] Speakers

Thanks for the clarity George.

I'm not sure if the economist would like to stay for the event or if he will plan to arrive in time to speak, speak, and leave. But I'd love to comp him a ticket as this isn't something he would normally attend. I'm sure the bank will pay for his room and meals if he decides to stay.

What are you working on right now that I can help you with?

Marcella, if the speaker is a WLTA or ILTA member, and is attending the seminar, nothing is done - we don't pay them anything, comp a room, etc. - and they are there anyway.

If it's someone who is employed by a member - say, First American has a speaker who's in Chicago, or Florida or wherever, and travels to events like ours (who is not in Washington, Oregon or Idaho and wouldn't be attending otherwise), then we might register them for free even if they are only there for their talk and don't stick around for meals, the receptions, etc. We would offer to register them for free (as if they were an attendee) but not a room or travel expenses.

As a courtesy, the ALTA rep is perked the registration fee; I will register Scott Chandler (and Julie, if I remember her name correctly and if she's attending), but we don't reimburse for travel or lodging. (We have paid for lodging - for one thing, they need to make sure they have a room before the block is used up.) The ALTA budgets travel (air fare in particular) and we haven't paid for that (might make an exception for a room). I would call Scott in advance and discuss it with him.

Other non-member speakers - an economist, for example - might want payment. Obviously, that's an expense that might be significant, and is part of the negotiation. For Skamania, the prices were sky high (I recall some of the economists wanted like a $10,000 speaking fee). We ended up with someone who just wanted a room and meals, so that was good. (He was from Portland, and was happy to come Monday for the reception and dinner, he sat through our Tuesday meetings, and attended the reception and dinner that evening. So, I registered him and paid for two nights. That's was a bargain.) That's why if Anthony can get someone for less, that would be great. We'll work out the comps, but those are worth it to not have to pay a hefty speaker fee.

I realize that in talking to non-member or non-industry speakers, this whole area can be awkward. But, for our members who are already registered and attending, it shouldn't be an issue.

Is this helpful?

I'm copying the Convention Committee with this - if anyone has any questions, please let me know. Thanks!

George

Subject: Speakers

Hello -

Can you confirm to me again what we talked about last Tuesday which is the coverage of costs for speakers?

ALTA representative - do we cover the registration if staying the whole time and spouse or just ALTA rep? They still pay for their own hotel room?

Other Speakers - They pay their own registration if staying for the whole event? If they only stop in for their hour talk and a lunch they don't have to pay? They still pay for the own hotel room?

If you can send this it would be super helpful as we finalize and discuss with the speakers.
