I think we should go with the FATIC Economist if availability/schedule works for them. Comping a registration fee is much better than a full meal deal for a speaker, especially if there is any concern with getting sponsorship money this year.

I have inquired about Ted Jones replacement but have not heard back. I will let you know if I hear back but I think its best to move forward with the FATIC speaker so we can secure the spots.

Any thoughts from the Committee? I may have lined up an economist from First American, and am only waiting on availability. Cost to us would only be the registration fee comped. They cover the expenses and don’t charge a fee.

Brian, did you check to see if Stewart has someone else on staff now to replace Ted Jones? If so, would they be available if the First American speaker isn’t available? And cover their costs?

If neither are available, in that order, I can check with another underwriter.

Thanks for following up with this, Brian!

My thoughts:

  1.  We really should have an economist on the agenda. While it’s somewhat traditional for conventions, it would probably be a hot topic for most attendees.

  1.  We’d probably “comp” the registration fee (and spouse/guest, if any) as well. With all those extras the cost will likely be more like $3,000 if not more. The cost probably could be absorbed with the current budget, but not any more than that. And if we can save it, so much the better.

  1.  The fee is less than I had quoted for us by some outside speakers 2 years ago for Semiahmoo when we talked to a couple of others. I can follow up with one or two and see if that’s changed. However, we didn’t get into whether that included travel and a room. But, see the next item…

  1.  However, the economist we got from the UW was happy to come for only the room and receptions and meals. He was well received. I can check again with him for availability if you want.

  1.  I believe First American and Fidelity each have economists on the payroll, and perhaps others do as well. Would those companies (1) charge – probably not, and (2) cover their cost (probably some of it)? I can call around for that if you want.

  1.  I suspect Stewart will replace Ted,  but if so – has that happened, and would that person be available…? Brian, can you check on that? If so, maybe Stewart would like to get exposure for that person.

  1.  Even if costs are covered by an underwriter for its economist, we’d probably comp the registration. Hopefully wouldn’t be expected to comp the room, airfare or car.

Good Morning Everyone,
Just got off the phone with Dr. Ted Jones. He let me know that now that he is retired, he is doing conferences still but only at a fee now and that Stewart is not covering costs any longer.

He will agree to speak but his terms are:

  *   Airfare, Hotel and Car Rental (if needed)
  *   Plus a $2,000 speaking fee

If we don’t want to spend the $$ as the WLTA board – would we consider having some the UW sponsorship money to go towards his fee’s/expenses?

I leave it to the group to decide on if this is the direction everyone wants to go but my personal opinion is that this seems like a lot of money to spend if a) we don’t normally spend $$ on speakers and b) we are concerned about getting sponsorship money from UW’s and sponsors.

We don’t normally pay travel and room charges for industry speakers. Most are attendees anyway (example: Paul on cybersecurity, agent and underwriter panel members, etc.). Association members (i.e. agents and underwriters) cover their employee expenses. But he and his wife wouldn’t need to pay for registration, we’d register them for no charge because he’d not normally be attending this event.

But, we can certainly offer to cover travel and room (or maybe just the room?) and that would help Stewart, although add to our costs.

The Convention Committee can decide what to do on that. I’d suggest covering his registration and room, but not travel. Your thoughts?

By the way – we neglected to discuss an economist. There was no consensus in our last email discussion. Ted Jones, who will be retiring, is probably a good choice, albeit very familiar to everyone. But, no fee involved.

This all assumes the one we want is available…

Do we want to contact the 4 names I mention in my last email ((Ted Jones, Skylar Olson – Zillow, Mathew Gardner – Seattle Times & pricy, Brian Kelly – Seattle U)), and do we have a volunteer who can do that? I suspect most involve a fee. Since the economy is on everyone’s mind, I think this topic is important and timely. It might be worth paying for this. I’d say $1,000-$2,000 but we should discuss. (I think Matthew Gardener is more than that by a lot.)

If we agree on Ted, I assume Brian can make that call.
